Research Paper Introduction Paragraph

Stephanie Waddell Professor JoAnn Harris English Comp I 8 November 20   How would the implementation of Universal Basic Income affect the US? What a year 2020 has been! From Trump’s impeachment trial and acquittal, the COVID-19 pandemic, mass unemployment due to stay at home orders, Congress passing the CARES Act, and the election. The CARES Act gave citizens a $1200 stimulus payment and supplemented unemployment payments with an additional $600 a week payment for a few months. 2020 Democratic presidential primary candidate, Andrew Yang proposed the” Freedom Dividend”, a $1000 per month payment to all citizens 18 and up. Universal Basic Income would “level the playing field” for all citizens by paying a monthly cash payment. Blog #12 - Research

Universal Basic Income is my topic of choice. I have found out all sorts of information out on this subject. I believe the concept is a great idea.   It has a lot of opposition. It is not even about political party affiliation. Proponents for this idea believe it would help get so many people out of poverty and give them the opportunity for more education and to take care of their families. They also believe it would help stimulate the economy. Opponents of this idea believe that it would bankrupt the country. They also believe that it would make people not want to work at all; and that some would spend it on all the wrong things. UBI is a system being looked at by countries all over the world. I, along with many others, believe UBI is what the people need.

Economics Pros / Cons Universal Basic Income Universal Basic Income How will implementing UBI affect the already existing social services in our country? Income in our country would “level the playing field” for all citizens by paying everyone a specified amount monthly. Citizens that are considered at or below the poverty line would be affected by the implementation of UBI.  Funding in the country’s budget for social services would be taken away to fund UBI. Alternate but a related idea – Alternative to UBI – alternative such as paying for college / Universal Healthcare.     I chose the topic of Universal Basic Income. It is a very hot topic in the US election. There are many  proponents and opponents for this idea. This subject is interesting to a lot of people due to the effects  it would have on individuals and the US budget. UBI has been tried and tested in many countries.  Could UBI work in the US? I believe that it could.  Enable Ginger Cannot connect to Ginger Check your int

LYING? TELLING THE TRUTH? What is Social Media doing?

Image
I woke up this morning at 5 AM. Guess what the first thing I did was. Snooze my alarm! Ok, the second thing I did was look at my phone. I checked for new texts, news alerts, and to see what went on in the world while I was asleep last night. So many of us rely on our phones for socializing, working, entertainment, school, and the list goes on and on. Social media and websites all readily available to view, read, and scroll to our heart's content. Scrolling through social media for news has become the norm. Almost 20 % of US adults get political news from social media. The Pew Research Center surveyed Oct.29- Nov.11 which shows, "Americans who mainly get their news on social media are less engaged, less knowledgeable." Is all of this news real or is it "fake news"? Have you read any of the "facts" that the president has posted on his social media? Or have you read the conspiracy theory about the COVID 19 pandemic on social media? Less

Your Brain on Music

Image
The song "Stand By Me" brings a feel-good vibe. Listening to it not only makes me feel good, but it also makes me think the world isn't such a bad place and that if we all can help each other out then the world will be a better place. All the that came from listening to a song? The music has triggered Dopamine in my brain. What is Dopamine? It is neurochemical that our brains release when we do things such as eat food, have sex, and listen to music. The chemical makes us feel pleasure and satisfaction when we do these things. It boosts our mood; it motivates us; it grabs our attention;, and helps us to regulate our movements, learning, and emotions. The song and video "Stand By Me" shows the viewer/listener the musicians and their audiences' enjoyment from creating and listening to the song. Dopamine is definitely at work here. The chemical is bringing everyone happy feelings. It makes them curious about the song and

Kids Bones Versus Adult Bones - How the use of different multimodal formats affects your site experience

Image
Do you find this interesting?    Or is this interesting?  The human body is an amazing thing! Babies have more bones (nearly 300 bones) in their small, fragile little bodies than an adult (206 bones) does. Learning this information from different sites was interesting, interactive, and downright boring at times. The formats used in a site can draw you in or have you in a rush to click to the next one so you don't fall asleep.  The first site chosen was very attention-getting. It drew me in with its catchy title and imagery. The interesting human body facts and images that coincided with them kept me wanting to scroll down the page to find out more. The author had the right mix of information and imagery to keep me engaged to the bottom of the page.  The second site chosen was a generic fact site. The site was not interactive at all. There was a lot of information that droned on and on down. Black and white illustrations were integrated throughout the site, but they were lackluste

Sports : Competition Born From Day To Day Life

Image
Competition between people is as old as time. One man says to the other," I bet I can outrun you when the bear chases us," and so it began. Everyday tasks: running, hunting, and defense become sporting competitions. Was it a way to show who is best? A way to show off? Or just a way to talk trash and pass the time? We will never know for sure.    The two earliest sports that were competed in were running and wrestling. The origins of the earliest sports competitions in these sports are dated back over four million years ago. Both have cave drawings that date back 15,300 years ago. They are depicted in the art of several different early civilizations which include France, Mongolia, Japan, Lybia, and Ireland.     The Olympic Games began in 776 BCE. Running was the first event in these games. There were actually four different running competitions. Wrestling was introduced in 704 BCE. The first Olympic Games only had Greek participants. Today the Olympics has participants from o
