LYING? TELLING THE TRUTH? What is Social Media doing?

I woke up this morning at 5 AM. Guess what the first thing I did was. Snooze my alarm! Ok, the second thing I did was look at my phone. I checked for new texts, news alerts, and to see what went on in the world while I was asleep last night. So many of us rely on our phones for socializing, working, entertainment, school, and the list goes on and on. Social media and websites all readily available to view, read, and scroll to our heart's content. Scrolling through social media for news has become the norm. Almost 20 % of US adults get political news from social media. The Pew Research Center surveyed Oct.29- Nov.11 which shows, "Americans who mainly get their news on social media are less engaged, less knowledgeable." Is all of this news real or is it "fake news"? Have you read any of the "facts" that the president has posted on his social media? Or have you read the conspiracy theory about the COVID 19 pandemic on social media? Less than half of the people polled cared about the possibility of the news that they are getting through social media might be fake. It makes you wonder if Americans just want to be entertained or get news about the world. Are there any possibilities that we can use social media in positive ways? An article written by Lori Wade gives a great overview of how we can integrate social media into education and impact teachers, children, and their parents. Teachers can use social media for making assignments more interactive and posting information on projects. Parents can use it to speak with their child's teacher and to get information about what is going on at their child's school. The student becomes more engaged through technology. The options given by social media to the educational experience would definitely be positive. Social media has both good and bad aspects. Not many of us can honestly say that we haven't been on the internet mindlessly scrolling our time away. The important thing to remember is to be able to discern the difference between fact and fiction.
